Picture your time in this area

Nikko's main sights are split between the town area around Toshogu and Shinkyo Bridge and the Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls area beyond Irohazaka. Because travel conditions differ even within Nikko, keep treatment days focused on one area and consider Oku-Nikko mainly for non-treatment days.

Treat the shrine district as one travel area

Combine Toshogu, Futarasan Shrine, Rinnoji, Shinkyo Bridge, and Tamozawa Imperial Villa only after checking opening hours and the route between them.

Set aside separate travel time for Oku-Nikko

Plan Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, the Nikko Natural Science Museum, and Ryuzu Falls separately from central Nikko and check current road and bus information.

Fix the treatment journey first

Before planning sightseeing routes, confirm facility acceptance, check-in time, documents, and the route from the accommodation.

Area overview and getting around

  • The Toshogu area and the Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls area are separated despite being in the same city. Check buses, transfers, and operating times for the travel date.
  • Displayed distances are straight-line estimates from saved coordinates. They do not include mountain roads, elevation, congestion, or bus journey times.

Planning a trip with treatment days

  • A listing does not guarantee acceptance for an individual traveler. Confirm the date, dialysis requirements, documents, and payment directly with the facility.
  • If combining treatment and Oku-Nikko travel on one day, do not rely on a fixed journey time; prioritize clinical guidance and current transport information.

Main place to visit

Ryuzu Falls

Tochigi · Nikko City

A cascading stream waterfall counted among the three noted waterfalls of Oku-Nikko, flowing for approximately 210 metres over stepped rock. Its name is traditionally linked to the way the flow divides near the plunge pool.

Access overview
From JR Nikko or Tobu-nikko Station, take a bus toward Yumoto Onsen for about 65 minutes, then walk about two minutes from the Ryuzu-no-taki stop. By car it is listed as about 30 minutes from Kiyotaki IC.
Planning point
The saved coordinates identify the named visitor point by the plunge pool, reached on foot from the bus stop. Consider viewing the falls from the pool separately from walking the path alongside the cascade. Official tourism information does not specify every step, gradient or winter surface condition, so check the weather and conditions on the day and choose a manageable route. The autumn foliage period attracts many visitors.

Separate the shrine district and Oku-Nikko across days

An example to consider only after treatment and the facility journey are confirmed.

  1. On the treatment day, prioritize travel between the facility and accommodation and limit sightseeing to one place in the same area.
  2. On another day, narrow the shrine-district stops and check opening and admission times and the route between them.
  3. Give Oku-Nikko a separate time block or day and check round-trip transport and the last service.
